FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an international organization dedicated to spreading the education of science and technology among students. Founded in 1989 by renowned inventor Dean Kamen, FIRST has grown rapdily around the world and now hosts several robotics programs to give students firsthand experience in the application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). By participating in FIRST's programs, students learn things that they would not normally be taught in a traditional classroom environment, as well as valuable life skills, such as leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking.
Based in Manchester, New Hampshire, FIRST is dependent upon partnerships with educational institutes, government agencies, and private businesses for funding, volunteers, outreach, and support. FIRST's success is due in part to the hard work and dedication of over 50,000 adult mentors and supporters who step forward to guide FIRST teams as they prepare to compete.
